Summary

Wagtail’s slash command lets editors work in StreamField paragraph blocks without leaving the keyboard. Pressing Enter and then slash opens a menu for changing text to headings or numbered lists, inserting blocks such as a custom newsletter sign-up form, and splitting one paragraph block into two so another block can be inserted between them. The menu can also be operated with the mouse, and the preview panel shows how the resulting content is structured.

Key takeaways

  • Press Enter followed by slash in a paragraph block to open the command menu.
  • Use the menu to change formatting, including headings and numbered lists.
  • Insert available StreamField blocks, including custom blocks such as a newsletter sign-up form.
  • Split a paragraph block at the cursor position to insert another block between the two resulting paragraphs.
  • The slash-command menu works with either keyboard navigation or the mouse.

Hi folks, my name is Megan and I'm going to show you a handy feature in Wagtail today called the slash command. So say I'm making a blog post about Streamfield. It's mostly filled out already, so I don't bore you with typing. I'm going to go down here to this stream field area where the body section is, and I'm going to add a paragraph block. And paragraph blocks are like the standard blocks you write in in Wagtail and in Wagtail they come with something pretty handy. So I'm just gonna go ahead and add like a little introductory paragraph here and say I wanted to switch the formatting to a new heading. All I have to do is hit enter and then slash to bring up this menu and my hands don't even have to leave the keyboard I can just hit the up arrow until I get to the H2 heading that I want.

So and then I can type something like things, the slash, command. can do. And then I can go ahead and use the slash command again to switch my formatting again. And you know now I want to make a numbered list so I select that option And so I already showed you how it can change the formatting, but also the slash command can add blocks and you can also use the slash command to split blocks as well. And let me go ahead and add some more content here so I can show you how all that works. I'm just gonna go ahead copy and paste some stuff over here and put it in so that we can save a little time. And so

1:34

say I'm down here at the bottom and I want to add a new block And I'm just going to go ahead and use the slash command again. And by the way, if you don't like using the keyboard, you can just go ahead and use your mouse to select the option that you want. And so I think I want to go ahead and add something to the end here. We have a newsletter that we use on Wagtail. org. So I'm going to go ahead and add the sign-up form for that newsletter here as a block This is a custom block we have on Wagtail. org. It's super useful. And so I use the slash command to do that. Uh say, you know, I forgot to add a block quote in the middle of this that I wanted to add. So I could just go ahead and find the spot where I want to add it. Go ahead and hit enter to get into the right position

2:23

and then use the slash command to bring out the menu here And we're going to go all the way down to the bottom of the menu to use the split block function here. And now you see that that paragraph block, that single paragraph block became two paragraph blocks. blocks right at the spot where I wanted to add that block quote and so I'm gonna go ahead and add a block quote here stream field is amazing And you can go ahead and see over in the preview panel here a little bit about how all of that is structured. But yeah, that is the slash command. That's how you use it. I hope you take this tip forward and use it for your own wagtail content and enjoy it.
