Day 1 Welcome Remarks

Hello everybody, my name is Megan and I'm a member of the Wagtail Core team. It is my pleasure to welcome each and every one of you to Wagtail Space 2025. We still got folks filtering in here. I am joining from Chapel Hill, North Carolina in the United States today. So I'm curious, where is everybody else coming in from? Go ahead and share it down in the chat so that we can get a sense of where everybody is uh tuning in from. Charlbury, London, uh Londoners, we got some folks from Germany. Uh Bristol, Los Angeles, California. Oh wow, that is so early in the morning.

We got folks in from Rochester, Pittsburgh, Iceland, yes, Ghana, awesome, awesome. India, nice Brazil, Romania, Vienna, Nairobi. Oh, this is amazing, y'all. I'm I'm loving to see where everybody is coming from today. Well, we're going to be flying on this spaceship together for three whole days. And no matter where you're joining from in the world, this is going to be an amazing spaceflight. Now, unlike a real space agency, we don't expect you to have years and years of training in order to join Wagtail Space. And honestly, we don't have to give you one of those things that can kill you

safety briefings. Like on this spaceship, we don't have to worry about oxygen depletion or radiation. This spaceship is all about fun. And so I wanted to go ahead though and help everybody figure out where things are on this spaceship. So let's take a little bit of a tour so that I can show everybody where everything is and get you oriented. Alright, everybody, our spaceship happens to look a whole lot like the Zoom events platform. What a coincidence! And so as you can see here, this is the lobby of our spaceship. And in the lobby area, you will see all of the upcoming sessions.

And you also can access the chat and a few other areas in our spaceship. If you want to see all the sessions and look at the whole schedule for the entire conference You can click the sessions tab here, and that way you can get the whole list of everything that we're going to be covering over the next few days. If you want to make up your own itinerary or make sure that you don't miss a session that you're really keen to see, what you can do is you can use this little bookmark symbol here. Go through all the sessions that you'd like to see and put any bookmarks that you like next to them. And then if you click over to this itinerary tab here

You'll have your itinerary all built out for you so that you can remember exactly what talks you'd like to see. Now, if it turns out that you have two talks That are happening at the same time, and that you want to really, really see them both. Good news. All the recordings will be accessible in the lobby area and the spaceship after the talks have happened So if you can't attend a talk live, don't worry. You can always come back and watch the recording of the talk that you weren't able to go to live later. As our astronauts on this spaceship, you have full access to all the recordings and you can definitely come back and catch up on anything that you missed. Alright, how you get between sessions.

So when you want to navigate to a session, you want to either go to the lobby and click this blue join button. or to the sessions tab in between sessions. So that's how you navigate through the spaceship. We also have in our spaceship some ways to connect with other people, which is very important because everybody needs to get along in close quarters. And so we have a way to get to know our speakers a little bit better under this speakers tab here. You can Go ahead and check out their bios, get to know them a little bit better. And they are all amazing people that are here to share their wisdom and their projects with you this week. There's also a networking tab here where you can get to know some of the other attendees who are joining us on the space flight today.

You can also fill out your own profile if you'd like to add a little bio And also, if you're the sort of person who's really keen to chat, let me go ahead and show you how the chat settings and profiles work. So right here if you click on your profile you'll notice that you have a few different options here. If you're feeling social and you really want to chat everybody up, you can click the Feeling Social button right here. And that signals to everybody, hey, I'd love to chat right now. You can also click choose Simply Exploring if you're like, maybe you might be in the mood to chat if somebody reaches out, but maybe you just kind of want to hang out. If you're really definitely not in the mood for chat, if you'd prefer to lurk, there's also a hide

me button right here that you can click and that'll hide you from the search. And it you can still reach out to people if you want to, but it'll give you an opportunity to kind of get some space and maybe take a break if you're not feeling like socializing. Alright. And in the chat area here, you don't have you won't have as many options as I do since I am one of the spaceflight captains and have full access to a bunch of different chats. You'll all have access to the lobby chat here, which is a giant group chat for everybody in the conference. This is a great spot to ask questions and connect with people. But if you want to connect with people individually, you can also start chats with individuals.

And you can also, I'll use my uh my fellow co-captain here, Lisa, as an example, uh, you can also start a group chat with people if you want to create a smaller group or connect with some friends. through the chat area. Alright. Let's go back to our lobby chat here so that I can highlight one thing. You'll notice we have one pinned post in here And this is honestly the best way to make sure that y'all have access to two very important links that we have. Including if you click here, you'll get an opportunity to download our official Zoom backgrounds. For Wagtail Space 2025. There is also a video

similar to the one that I have here in my Space Portals that you can use to create your own Space Portal effect. We also have our sign up for Lightning Talks, which I will get to in just a second, but just so you know, that link is there in the chat, and that is where you'll be able to find it throughout the event. Alrighty. Let me switch on over to my slides here so that I can give y'all a Give y'all the rundown of what today's mission flight is going to look like. So, day one, y'all, we're going to have 11 talks. Amazing talks. You should definitely check out as many of them as you can.

And then after our talk session and our closing remarks, we're going to have a lightning talks and social session. Now what are lightning talks? They are honestly one of the most fun things in the world in my opinion. They are five-minute topics And the only rules are that they have to be five minutes long and they have to follow our code of conduct. On the on the Other than that, your topic can be anything that you're passionate about, and anybody can give a lightning talk. So if you're somebody who like is totally new to speaking. This is a great opportunity to get up in front of folks and uh, you know, give a talk on something that you're passionate about. And this is also an opportunity to try something out in front of a friendly audience.

I happen to think we have one of the most friendly audiences in the world. But we have the sign-up form is available in that pin that I just showed you. And after we're done with all the lightning talks, we're going to leave the Zoom room open and we're going to hang out for as long as folks feel like hanging out We also I also wanted to highlight that we have one early bird social hangout that is happening tomorrow. I put early in quotes because you know time zones are not the most relevant thing when you're flying through space And I know that it early means something different for everybody. All right. Now, it's very important when you're on a spaceflight together and in close quarters

to make sure that everybody gets along. And harmony is something that is very important to us. And for that reason, we have a code of conduct for Wagtail Space 2025. We are dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience to everyone at Wagtail Space 2025 We want to make it clear that the code of conduct applies to everybody in all conference spaces. That includes chats, all Zoom rooms, everywhere. And this code of conduct will be strictly enforced. If you need to talk to somebody, or if you need to make a report Please get in touch with us through the event email address events at wagtail. org, or you're welcome to reach out directly to one of the conference organizers.

We have the full code of conduct on our event website, and I will drop that link in the lobby chat as a reminder to everybody in just a bit. All right, if you need help with something else during the event, where to go? Well, the lobby chat is one place to definitely start out with because not only are the event organizers paying attention to the chat, but you have a bunch of Attendees here with you to help you out as well.
