Wagtail’s built-in translation support copies a page into another locale but does not translate its content. Coen van der Kamp describes a small enhancement aimed at sites that need machine translation without adopting Wagtail Localize, a larger package with overridden views and more complex features. He demonstrates copying pages, including subpages, into another locale and translating them into French. The project is published on GitHub and PyPI, and he invites people to try it and share feedback or contribute pull requests.

So, mijn name is Koen. Ik werk at Fordigits. We build websites en organise conferences. And in the meantime we do a code sprint and uh I worked on the following that I wanted to share with you. There's a big gap between uh WagTil simple translation that does copying the page to another locale but doesn't do any translation itself. And on the other hand, WagtoLocalize, which is uh a big package that also overrides views and does complex things, can do machine translation for you. But for many sites is not the right fit. So I wanted to improve the
uh translation experience and uh Enhance vector simple translation a bit. So I've got multiple pages here. I hope you can see this. And um there's some content here in this post. And um I um will attempt to live demo the copying it to another locale and have machine translating it to French. Let's include the sub pages and wait a second I know I don't speak French, is this right?
And um Yeah maybe that's that's correct. I f I think this is correct too. And um yeah that's correct. That's correct. Uh Yeah, I think that's correct too. So uh we published it to uh uh GitHub and I used an excellent uh cookie cutter from Wagtail. Which made setting up this up quite easy and it's also on PyPI. And try to use it and give some feedback, open the pull request, and have an excellent conference.
